FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

We stayed in York for 2 nights (Monday-Wednesday) and we found that this was the perfect amount of time. We arrived to the accommodation around 3pm on the Monday and explored the nightlife after a relax in the room. We then spent the whole of the next day exploring the town. The Shambles was full of cute, quirky shops and the city is full of history. I would highly recommend going into York Minster, especially if you enjoy history/Romans. There are so many lovely spots to enjoy lunch - we ate at Drift-In and had the most amazing sandwiches (the desserts also looked amazing!!) and is dog friendly. The Stone Roses Bar is also a great location for some drinks with great music and atmosphere. Our last day consisted of us walking the city walls and enjoying the National Railway museum. There is a lot to do for young couples, like us, but also families. We really enjoyed York and will definitely be back in the near future.

So much to do and see in York. Ideal city break as everything is within walking distance. Great for families with lots of attractions to keep everyone happy. York Minster, the Jorvik Centre, York Castle Museum, walking the walls, Clifford’s Tower, the Shambles and a ghost tour filled our two day stay. A fabulous meal at The Star Inn was a highlight.

I would definately recommend going on the ghost bus tour, it was great fun! We dinned out at The Ivy restaurant in york centre ( st Helens Square)- the food was delicious and great service and just a 2 mins walk up the road is a luvly cocktail bar called Nola- the drinks are to die for and there is jazz/soul music. York is easy go get around, by walking, taxi or bus.

Very dissapointed with York, the town was so busy, people in the bars and pubs at lunch time coming out drunk and shouting about, looked like a cattle market! York was like London during the day and Ibiza in the afternoon/evening, not a historic town we thought it would be, not a place to visit at weekends. We have been told York is now a place for hen and stag do's, this we can see!

I really loved the vibe of the whole hotel, the rooms were really quirky, spacious and decorated elegantly and there was a queen sized bed which was super comfy. I thought it was a great touch that the curtains were Velcro taped to the edge of the wall so as it became light the room was in total blackout, because of this my toddler slept like a dream and we all managed to get a lie in. All in all we had a great time here and we’re shocked that it was one of the cheapest places to stay in York at the time of our booking.
